What would happen if Gilbert and Sullivan clubbed together with Rogers and Hammerstein to rewrite Phantom of the Opera in Spanish? Ok apart from needing a time machine, and lets leave aside the potential for that mix to go horrendously wrong, but assuming such a mix came out with the best of all worlds, thats kinda what you have with Zorro. An engaging story, fantastic staging, catchy music (most of the group numbers are covers of Gipsy Kings songs like Bamboleo), stage illusions (mostly bodyswaps) and more flamenco dancing than Iapos;ve seen in total in my life before watching this show. Zorro very definitely doesnapos;t take himself sersiouly (scriptwise I mean - as an actor he was fantastic) with responses like: "what took you so long?" "Well you try finding 7 zorro costumes in this place".

As usual I have gone straight for the music and am actively looking for any hint of score/sheet music for the more simple solo songs. As it only opened in July itapos;s unlikely to be out yet, but if anyone spots it let me know. Meanwhile, everyone go see it Currently at the Garrick, was meant to be a short run but itapos;s been extended into 2009 so no excuses. Well worth it.
